gems 0.0 (alpha) released

This is an alpha release of the GEMS email system I started in jan of 2000. I haven’t been working on it lately since it’s “good enough” for me now. It cannot send mail. The only “normal” frontend that works is ‘gnome-o’, and the only backend that works is the MySQL db. It cannot receive email, but it can parse spools. What I’m doing on my system is running ‘fetchmail’ then ‘gems snarf $MAIL’ every hour from cron on my server, then using the GNOME_o client to read it. Mailboxes work, automatic filing works, it can handle some pretty large volumes of email pretty quickly. It doesn’t do mime or special character encoding, though… If there is a lot of interest in this project, I’ll try to divert more attention to it.
